I'm not entirely sure on the use of social networking in Libraries, I can see definate potential in using it to connect with teen library users. Prehaps haing a library group on facebook etc for library members of our library that would allow them to post ideas, comments, suggestions for purchase etc.Shannon Harmonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15738338062018430385noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255171128157458973.post-327128403624385532009-02-24T11:38:00.000+11:002009-02-24T11:43:28.933+11:00week 11 - online applications and toolsI found google docs to be a great idea. It would be great for accessing documents that usually you would save on one computer and then would have to have a storage device etc to use it on a different computer. I think it has definate applications in my workplace. For example we have a roster for when staff are working that can change quite a bit. When this happens our casual staff have to come into work to check and then confirm that they are ok to work. It we had our roster saved as a google doc then staff could check it online and make confirmations without having to physically come into the library or have lengthy phone conversations. I'm sure it could be used in other situations as well such as when more tahn one staff member is working on a project.Shannon Harmonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15738338062018430385noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255171128157458973.post-4977716718168217742009-02-24T11:18:00.000+11:002009-02-24T11:21:20.712+11:00Week 10 - MashupsThis is such a fun thing to do with photos. I can see a variety of uses for mashups to be used at my library. It would be great for promotional stuff such as brochures or to create a calendar as a gift to our friends of the library at Christmas time and could have photos of the Library and events we have held over the year. It would be great to add a little spice to presentations and could also be used as a children's activity for our storytime sessions.Shannon Harmonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15738338062018430385noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255171128157458973.post-20379870014352813392009-02-24T11:17:00.000+11:002009-02-24T11:18:03.933+11:00Mashups<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9dc0jjNm90A/SaM8qUrYaTI/AAAAAAAAAAc/WGq-nk5AzZY/s320/frame7000887.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306151483775412530" />Shannon Harmonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15738338062018430385noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255171128157458973.post-62383739131058950022009-02-24T09:21:00.000+11:002009-02-24T09:26:48.377+11:00Week 9 - podcasts and audioI think that there is a great opening for podcasts to be used in libraries. We could use podcasts for Library tours, how to use the OPAC and Library databases, and a whole range of other things that I can't even begin to imagine. Podcasts could be used for staff members who couldn't make it to staff meetings, for a quick reference guide when learning new skills (after being shown how to do something they could refer back to a podcast if they are having trouble remembering a certain part).Shannon Harmonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15738338062018430385noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255171128157458973.post-20309675510345295912009-02-21T13:32:00.003+11:002009-02-21T13:37:03.228+11:00Week 8Wow, what an amazing idea for getting the word out about library reference services. So many times I get library members saying I dont want to be a hassle, when of course helping them to find information is what we are here for. I'm not sure at this stage if our library could have a role in "slamming the boards", i think it would be great to be able to, but maybe it's something to look forward to. I think our customers would like to be able to rate the amount of information we have on particular subjects and the qualilty of this information as well as rating our service in being helpful and finding the necessary information.Shannon Harmonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15738338062018430385noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255171128157458973.post-60907932792257281602009-02-21T13:09:00.002+11:002009-02-21T13:16:29.038+11:00Week 7I must admit I struggled with Del.icio.us. I could seem to be able to post it correctly on my blog. I can see that it would be a useful tool for research assistance, not only could you use the websites that you know and are familiar with but can also look at other websites that othe people find useful. Also being able to access favourite websites from any computer is a major bonus, its rather annoying when you have to try and remember the address because the website is saved as a favourite on a different PC. I think with more practise I will probably use del.icio.us more, once I can find my way around.Shannon Harmonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15738338062018430385noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255171128157458973.post-83009552203374588762009-02-17T12:17:00.001+11:002009-02-17T12:17:52.405+11:00Delicious
Bookmark this on DeliciousShannon Harmonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15738338062018430385noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255171128157458973.post-73429220126724626882008-12-05T14:06:00.002+11:002008-12-05T14:12:39.434+11:00Week 6 YouTubeafter looking at the suggested searches for YouTube videos I realised that it can be used for a variety of things. It would be great for promotional videos of libraries or even how to use datebases etc. Once again I had to force myself to stop looking up videos and continue the Learning 2.0 exercies. Again this week Learning 2.0 has fueled my Star Wars addicition with Lego Star Wars videos. I espically liked the Eddie Izzard Death Star Canteen, what could be better my favourite movie and my favourite comedian brought together by lego.
Shannon Harmonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15738338062018430385noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255171128157458973.post-26471125223850844632008-11-18T10:57:00.003+11:002008-11-18T11:17:10.874+11:00Week 5: WikisI am finding this topic very interesting with the variety of ways that wikis can be used. Having already used Wikipedia for personal use I was familiar with that use of a wiki but I didn't realise how a library could put them to use. I thought that the "what to do with Wikipedia" Information Today article raised some very good points, as a university student I know that one of the first things we were told was to not use Wikipedia as a source and so the arguments raised in the article were very close to home. As a Star Wars fan I especially liked Wookieepedia, although I had to move on before I got too absorbed and forgot I was at work. I also liked the Library Success wiki and have made it a favourite so I can revisit it as I think it has beneficial information for libraries.
I think that book reviews would be a great way to incorporate wikis in a library. It would provide an excellent way to interact with users.Shannon Harmonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15738338062018430385noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255171128157458973.post-25681033689554333232008-11-13T09:15:00.004+11:002008-11-13T10:54:38.914+11:00Week 4 - RSSI must admit that setting up my RSS with Bloglines was a bit of a struggle. While the RSS itself was easy to set up I had difficulty thinking of websites to use. Thankfully the suggestions from the Learning 2.0 activities were a good start. I choice the Powerhouse museum picture of the day blog, Librarybytes, ABS for Librarians, a google news feed and fellow colleague's blog (I found this an easier way to follow her updates as opposed to following in blogger). I can see how RSS feeds would be useful in staying up to date with news etc, however it is possible to be inundated with news articles if the RSS is not accessed regularly. I can see that RSS would be useful fro libraries to access updates easily without needing to go to multiple websites to check for updates. Likewise the library could create a RSS feed for its website so that library clients could quickly access any new information regarding the library.Shannon Harmonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15738338062018430385noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255171128157458973.post-59639922560365084722008-11-05T16:46:00.001+11:002008-11-05T16:46:41.838+11:00Glen Innes Severn Public & TAFE Library

Glen Innes Severn Public & TAFE Library
Originally uploaded by librarykate
When I first looked at flickr, I discovered that there were no photos of the library where however when I looked again I discovered that a fellow staff member had added a photo as part of the Learning 2.0 program. I thought that the blog WW1: Experiences of an English Soldier was interesting and not really something I would have thought of. Already I am seeing how blogs etc could be applied to the library I work in. I can see that blogs can have a range of uses in the library environment, from publicity to reviews and much more. I'm curious as to what will come next in Learning 2.0 and hope it will be as interesting as it has been so far.Shannon Harmonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15738338062018430385noreply@blogger.com1
